🍫 German Chocolate Cake

Rich, moist chocolate cake layered with a buttery coconut-pecan filling makes this classic dessert hard to resist.

Ingredients

Chocolate Cake

  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 cups granulated sugar
  • ¾ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 tsp baking soda
  • 1 tsp baking powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 2 large eggs
  • 1 cup buttermilk
  • ½ cup vegetable oil
  • 2 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1 cup hot coffee or hot water

Coconut-Pecan Filling

  • 1 cup evaporated milk
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 3 large egg yolks
  • ½ cup unsalted butter
  • 1 tsp vanilla extract
  • 1⅓ cups sweetened shredded coconut
  • 1 cup chopped pecans

Instructions

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F. Grease and line three 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, baking powder, and salt.
  3. Add eggs, buttermilk, oil, and vanilla. Mix until combined, then slowly stir in the hot coffee.
  4. Divide batter between pans and bake for 22–27 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out with a few moist crumbs. Cool completely.
  5. For the filling, combine evaporated milk, sugar, egg yolks, and butter in a saucepan. Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly, for about 10–12 minutes until thickened.
  6. Remove from heat and stir in vanilla, coconut, and pecans. Let cool.
  7. Layer the cakes with generous amounts of coconut-pecan filling between each layer. Cover the top and sides with the remaining filling.
  8. Sprinkle with extra chopped pecans and coconut, then slice and serve.

Tip: Chill the assembled cake for about 30 minutes before slicing for cleaner layers.
