🍫 Moist Chocolate Loaf Cake with Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing
Rich, deeply chocolatey, and incredibly moist, this chocolate loaf gets even better with a thick layer of creamy chocolate frosting. Perfect with coffee, as an afternoon treat, or whenever a chocolate craving hits. 🤎
Ingredients
For the chocolate loaf:
- 1 ½ cups all-purpose flour
- ½ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp baking soda
- ½ tsp baking powder
- ½ tsp salt
- ¾ cup granulated sugar
- ½ cup packed brown sugar
- 2 large eggs
- ½ cup vegetable oil
- ¾ cup sour cream
- ½ cup whole milk
- 2 tsp vanilla extract
- ½ cup hot coffee
- ¾ cup semi-sweet chocolate chips
Chocolate Cream Cheese Icing:
- 4 oz cream cheese, softened
- ¼ cup unsalted butter, softened
- 1 ¼ cups powdered sugar
- ¼ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
- 1 tsp vanilla extract
- 1–2 tbsp heavy cream or milk
Directions
- Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line a 9×5-inch loaf pan with parchment paper.
- Whisk flour, cocoa powder, baking soda, baking powder, and salt together.
- In another bowl, whisk granulated sugar, brown sugar, eggs, oil, sour cream, milk, and vanilla until smooth.
- Add the dry ingredients and gently mix until almost combined. Slowly stir in the hot coffee, then fold in the chocolate chips. Avoid overmixing.
- Pour into the loaf pan and bake for 50–60 minutes, or until a toothpick inserted into the center comes out with a few moist crumbs.
- Cool for 15 minutes in the pan, then transfer to a rack and cool completely.
- Beat cream cheese and butter until creamy. Add powdered sugar, cocoa, and vanilla. Beat until smooth, adding enough cream to create a thick, spreadable icing.
- Spread a generous layer over the cooled loaf. Slice thick and serve. 🍫
Tip: For the moist, fudgy texture shown in the photos, pull the loaf from the oven as soon as the center is baked through. Overbaking will dry it out.
