Tender cinnamon-spiced apples, a flaky buttery crust, and rich salted caramel come together in a classic fall dessert with a sweet-and-salty finish.
Ingredients
Pie
• 2 refrigerated or homemade pie crusts
• 6 medium apples, peeled, cored, and thinly sliced
• ½ cup granulated sugar
• ¼ cup brown sugar
• 2 tbsp all-purpose flour
• 1½ tsp cinnamon
• ¼ tsp nutmeg
• 1 tbsp lemon juice
• 1 tsp vanilla extract
Salted Caramel
• 1 cup granulated sugar
• 6 tbsp butter, cut into pieces
• ½ cup heavy cream
• 1 tsp sea salt
For Finishing
• 1 egg
• 1 tbsp milk
• Coarse sugar, optional
• Extra flaky sea salt
Directions
-
Preheat oven to 400°F. Fit one pie crust into a 9-inch pie dish.
-
In a large bowl, combine sliced apples, granulated sugar, brown sugar, flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, lemon juice, and vanilla. Toss until evenly coated.
-
To make the caramel, heat sugar in a saucepan over medium heat, stirring gently until completely melted and amber in color.
-
Carefully whisk in butter, followed by heavy cream. Stir until smooth, then add sea salt. Let cool slightly.
-
Spoon the apple mixture into the prepared pie crust. Drizzle about ½ cup salted caramel over the apples.
-
Top with the second pie crust or create a lattice pattern. Trim and crimp the edges.
-
Whisk the egg with milk and brush over the crust. Sprinkle with coarse sugar if desired.
-
Bake for 20 minutes, then reduce the oven to 375°F and bake for another 35–45 minutes, until the crust is deeply golden and the filling is bubbling.
-
Let the pie cool for at least 2 hours so the filling can set.
-
Drizzle with extra salted caramel and finish with a light sprinkle of flaky sea salt before serving.
